Kwamzamo

Kwamzamo is a home for Aids-affected children, to the south of Durban. It was started by Raymond Madondo and a local committee in response to the traditional and local leaders’ request to enable these children to be cared for within their community rather than be sent away from their areas to formal children’s homes. There are no homes in their direct areas.

Registration

Kwamzamo is a registered organization with a Non-profit organization (NPO) registration number, no. 031105. This means it can raise funds, and it has an approved committee.

Location

Look for us at 30 01 01 15 S and 30 49 04 86 E. This is in a very high HIV prevalence area and is on a tar road with a clinic and schools nearby.

Start up

Kwamzamo was started in early 2006 with a structured approach and a clear plan, but without resources. Since then it has been able to survive and develop with the help of our sister organization in South Africa and of African Friends.

Size of home

Kwamzamo presently has 18 children under its roof. It plans to have between 24 and 36 children in the future. It may be described as a cluster home facility. Currently the basic buildings are being converted into small family units with a community living area.

Other activities

Kwamzamo uses one building to house a treatment program once a week, staffed and operated by government nurses. The site is ideal for small community initiatives. The intention is to also use it for educational purposes in the future, as the front line in the battle against Aids is still prevention.

Budget

A detailed budget is available. It costs about R1200 per child per month (about €130) to provide basic support. Soon the children can qualify for either government grants or foster grants of some R580 per capita. So they will always need a level of support but should target being basically sustainable.

African Friends involvement

Our primary aim is to help the committee of Kwamzamo to develop the project so that it can emerge as a fully fledged, registered clustered foster home, providing a lifeline to the local children affected by Aids and giving them the best future possible with the funds available. The target is to get Kwamzamo to the point of obtaining government assistance so that it can be independent and sustainable. Our involvement is always conditional upon good governance and the maintenance of a committee that is dedicated to good governance and good practice.
