African Friends is an international group of non-paid volunteers raising funds for children in South Africa who, as a result of Aids/HIV, live in wretched circumstances.

African Friends’ aim is to support small-scale projects that have evolved from initiatives of the local community and which do not as yet qualify for Government support.

How we work

We target those children who have no means of support and we help to set up homes for them.

• 100% of the donations received is spent on the projects.
• The projects become financially independent after the initial set-up period of
two to three years.
• The projects are set up and run by the local community.
• African Friends works with local volunteers. They are directly involved in
the projects as a result of the assistance they provide, in practical, advisory
and supervisory areas.
• The organisations must be officially registered as being non-profit.
• The projects include the building of Community Centers for the poorest
people in the area.
• The aim of the projects is to gain Government support benefits for the
children they provide care for.

The organisation of the projects must be carried out by and on behalf of the local community, which also bears the final responsibility for the projects.

African Friends’ aim is to support small-scale projects that have evolved from initiatives of the local community and which do not as yet qualify for Government support.

African Friends works with local volunteers. They provide practical, advisory, coordinating and monitoring assistance, so they are directly involved in the projects. The organization of the projects must be carried out for and by local people and they also bear the final responsibility. The projects must be registered as official foundations.

Donations

Donations are mainly spent on the purchase of food, on medical expenses, clothing, schooling, furnishing, kitchen implements and toys, but also for providing vegetable gardens and sanitary facilities. They are further used for the construction of separate sleeping areas for boys and girls and for setting up units which have a capacity of no more than six children with one care person. The care person must have completed a number of local courses in such areas as trauma counseling, First Aid and hygiene.

Kwamzamo

is a home for Aids-affected children, to the south of Durban. It was started by Raymond Madondo and a local committee in response to the traditional and local leaders’ request to enable these children to be cared for within their community rather than be sent away from their areas to formal children’s homes. There are no homes in their direct areas.
